When the lid is opened, a spring in the bottom drawer space pushes the bar up to allow the drawers to slide in and out. I don't think it would take much to make this feature functional. The lock for the top compartment is still present but there is no key. The top lid has a split that was repaired many years ago and a dark stain on the surface. The integrity of the lid has not been compromised.
There are several small screw holes on the front where a hasp was installed at some point. The sides of the chest are raised panel and the side handles and drawer pulls are brass. It measures 19 3/4" in length, 13 " in width, and 10 1/2 tall. It would make a dynamite jewelry box.
