And the handles and other hardware were dilapidated and broken. The owner said that the top had suffered a candle-burn and he wasnt thrilled with the repair he made, so years ago he painted the whole unit! I bought it anyway thinking someday I would get around to refinishing it. You will see the small repaired area Im referring to in any picture showing the top of the unit.
A nice décor item can easily cover that spot. During the recent Covid stay-at-home period I finally had the time to refinish this piece.
I have been restoring/refinishing other oak furniture items for 25 years and felt it was time to finally attack this project. It certainly was a challenge to strip and restore this piece, but I found it enjoyable as it began to spring back to life. He effort was worth it in order to preserve a very useful antique.
Yes, all the attached brass hardware is new, but it was carefully sourced online to be period-appropriate. If you ever shopped in an old-time hardware store, then you have seen this piece or others like it. Each of the drawers is fitted with a heavy sheet of galvanized steel necessary to hold the numerous screws and bolts that once occupied them.
I sanded every sheet and painted beige the top part that you see. It will safely hold your precious items.I have seen a few other multi-drawer oak cabinets on E-Bay before, but this one is pretty large and deep. This file cabinet was sanded 3 times using 60/150/220 grit sandpaper. I finished it with a red oak stain and 3 amber shellac coats, a finish often applied when it was first produced.
I also cleaned-up and put back the brass inventory number (33101) that the cabinet came with. Exterior: 25 ½ deep, 8 5/8 wide and 4 ¼ tall. 24 deep, 7 ½ wide and 3 ½ tall. Im Mike - Im using my wifes account to list this antique. Come see it because the pictures don't do it justice.
I'm 4 miles from Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ. I'm retired so just contact me and we'll arrange a time. By the way, I was able to transport this easily in my Honda Pilot.
