On either side are slats on long hinges that are secured by the lid on top lift the lid, swing the slats out and that frees up all the doors to open--swing the slats in and secure them with the closed lid and the compartment doors are secured shut. There is a lock mechanism on the lid; a key is missing and could very likely be replaced. In the meantime, it is unlocked so there is no problem accessing the cabinet. There are also two felt-lined rests/desks that slide easily in and out. A wonderful age-appropriate patina throughout.
One of the brass plates for a drawer has come loose and can be very easily remedied with a small screw. Otherwise the piece is rock solid, heavy (it's a two-person job to move it). It has holes beneath the legs to fit casters. We found no signs of structural damage or repairs. Varnish appears to be original to the piece--so 100+ years old.
