FRENCH PROVINCIAL WALNUT & LEATHER CARTONNIER CHEST OF DRAWERS. Circa early 20th century, twenty compartments over a single drawer Item # 611UBA03A. A most interesting piece from the turn of the century, this Empire style cartonnier is crafted of solid paneled and carved walnut primary surfaces to surround twenty divided compartments faced with patinated tooled leather. These are not drawers, the face plates drop forward on original hinges to reveal clean compartment spaces - certainly suitable for any number of applications, from shoe collections to important papers and files, it is such an interesting means of displaying and accessing materials. The distinctly Neoclassical taste follows from the fluted columns on either side of the compartments, the lower fourth with a beautifully carved display of acanthus over the handsome stepped molding of the base.
A single broad drawer in the bottom of the case withdraws smoothly from the case, the oak secondary woods hand dovetailed at each corner joint for a firm and sturdy drawer. It is difficult to find a more interesting and useful piece for the interior - the vibrant and beautifully patinated surfaces are just gorgeous, the light wood contrasting neatly against the darker burgundy of the leather. Very striking, entirely pure and retaining total originality throughout. 81 1/2 H x 39 W x 14 1/2 D. Minor scuffs, chips and abrasions to early finish.
Discoloration and wear to leather. Old discolored and worn paper inside. Please scroll below to view all images for a full overview of condition.
