Antique Oak 4 Bin Walker Seed Bean Country Store Counter

  
This is great country store display counter! It was made by the Walker Bin Co from Penn Yan, NY and as was typical for this company it has removable, tilting bins. This is an oak, single sided unit with 4 large bins that are glass-fronted to showcase the contents stored within each bin. The removable bins tilt out for easy access (and even have built in hand holds) and provide ample storage for a variety of things.

Seed and/or bean counters were a staple of general stores during the 19th and early 20th century and used for displaying and dispensing all types of bulk items like beans, seeds, grain, or similar products. I have used them literally throughout my home for many purposes. Counters of this height are very popular as kitchen islands as well as for entertainment centers because they are attractive and provide functional storage. Likewise, they make awesome display areas for retail merchants.

A garden center used one for a center piece to showcase their merchandise! It is in original condition without yet having been refinished see pics: oak veneer on left end is cracked and missing some pieces; top has a cut out on right back corner and staining; & bin panels have aged veneer with minor delamination. Originally when found in old general stores, these were much longer counters (12', 20', 24' long) that were divided into small sections making them more adaptable for homes. This counter has beadboard backing, one paneled end (on left facing it), and one unfinished oak end on right. It measures 73 1/2" L x 23" D x 37 1/4 T. (The top itself is 73 1/2" L x 18" D).

This wonderful piece of a bygone era would make an outstanding focal point in any setting: business or home. This is a genuine antique which by their nature are not perfect, there will be signs of age, wear, & use, but this lends credence to its history.
